Other Iraq | My real life experience

This hub describes you how and why I decided to accept the job offer in Iraq and an introduction to “Other Iraq – Kurdistan”. Later I will publish more hubs on “Other Iraq – Kurdistan”.
When I received a job offer in Iraq, all my relatives & friends told me “What? Are you kidding? please do not go there, don’t even think of such thing”. They were correct , even I thought the same way at the begining. But you know, their job offer was very good; paying well; $$$$$; I was stuck with loans; I did not have anything except my car and my wife. So how could I stop thinking to go there? Later I started to surf internet to know the security situation in the area where I got the job.
I found following details about the city where I got the job.
The city name is Suleymaniya which is located in northern Iraq and 70km away from Iranian border (There are many ways to spell the name “Suleimaniyah”, “Sulemania”, “Sulymaniah”, but still I do not know the correct spelling J ). People live here are Kurds and speak in Kurdish, but most of them are fluent in Arabic as well. These girls are so beautiful and wear likes westerners. Population is around 8 million. The Kurdistan Region is largely mountainous. Temperature variation is -18 C to +50 C. Believe me if you come here you can see snow in December and January. Humidity level is 20% ~ 40%.
Security situation in this area is very safe as per the articles in the web, actually it is very true. Last bomb attack took place in 2006 in this city which also against a night club. Later the hotel management closed the night club. There are less than 100 American troops are based in this area. Americans and Europeans move freely here and there without any arm or body guards. But you can see local army soldiers are everywhere with arms. When you go to a special place such as bowling centre, police or visa office they check your entire body by hand.
I found above information after reading hundreds of web articles, finally I decided to accept the job offer. Then, my relatives and friends asked me “Are you crazy?” But I trusted the articles in the web and thought about my financial situation. Finally I was correct and financially well secured; actually the articles in the web are correct.
Do you ever heard an area like Kurdistan in Iraq?

suramahe I'm glad things have worked out well for you. I lived in Turkey (south central) for 3 1/2 years and loved it.
Thanks for sharing. I really like the personal insight that you can't get anywhere else. Such beauty in a distant land. Keep writing about it. Hope your job works out well.
surahame - Great Hub! I came back to the states in March 09 after 4 years 8 months around Baghdad. (not as peaceful as Kurdish area) Work hard and have fun when you can. and stay safe. Bless you for your work!
Hi
I am thinking about moving to Kurdistan and was wondering if you have any input on where I should start with looking for a job? I am currently living in the U.S. I have done some research online but have not been successfull.
Thank you.
Hi suramahe,
I was born Suleymaniah and lived there until I was 14 years old, then moved to USA with my family. I have been living here for 13 years now and I want to go back to Suleymaniah but haven't had any luck finding a job over the web. I have a BS in Computer Science and have 3+ years of experience under my belt. I speak my native tongue Kurdish (Sorani) and English Fluently. I also know a little bit of Arabic. Any ideas what I might come across when I come back in a couple of month.
Thanks and God bless you
Thank you very much for your reply, I wasn't sure what to expect when I come back.
Through What website did you find your job in Kurdistan??
Thanks

suramahe - sounds like you made the right decision to go. It must be a beautiful area. I've only read about and done extensive research on Kurdistan. I am a student of middle eastern affairs and was once in the ambassador's training program under the US State Department.
I wish you continued success my friend and thanks for sharing your experience.
