LED-backlit LCD television (also know as LED TV) is a LCD TV that uses LED backlighting rather than fluorescent lights used in traditional LCD televisions.
The LED TVs are available in two forms,
1. Dynamic RGB LEDs - positioned behind the panel which allows dimming to occur locally creating specific areas of darkness on the screen. This technology helps to show truer blacks with higher dynamic contrast at the same time, which means, very clear picture of small bright objects on a dark background, such as star fields.
2. White Edge-LEDs - positioned around the rim of the screen. A special diffusion panel is used to spread the light evenly behind the screen. This technology helps to make LED TVs extremely thin. Further this panel helps to diffuse light uniformly across the screen.
LED vs LCD
Greater dynamic contrast - LED TV produces images with greater dynamic contrast compared to conventional LCD TV.
Extremly slim - LED TVs are extremly slim, most available models are just over one inch thick. First chart shows the comparison of thickness between each TV types (thickness of 42 inch TV).

Higher cost – LED TV are normally expensive since less market and newer technology. Second chart shows the price comparison of each TV type (42 inch TV price on Dec, 2009)
Less weight – 42 inch LED TV is lesser than 20kg. Conventional LCD TVs are in the range of 20~30 kg. Third chart shows the weight comparison.
Wider color gamut – RGB LED backlighting technology helps to provide wider color distribution in full range than conventional LCD TVs. Further LED can show actual Black but LCD cannot. The drawback of this is sometimes pictures are too informative which may create an artificial felling in your mind.
Less impact on environment – Traditional LCD displays are produced by using mercury. As a result of that there is an impact on disposal. However LED TVs are come with free mercury which extremely helps to avoid impact on environment.

LED Backlit TVS are still LCD TV's. The only "true" LED is the Sony OLED. So for now while there are some advantages and improvements these are not really LED's. Sad that the industry Marketers try to dupe the public this way.
